Our goal is to see that Gwinnett County children in Foster Care and Child Protective Services have a NEW / UNUSED book bag and school supplies to start the new school year. It means so much to a child who often has done without a lot of things to proudly carry a new book bag to school that first day—just like the other children.
We collect the book bags for elementary through high school age students. The collection usually takes place in the early summer months so the bags can be collected and distributed before school starts. You can call the church or watch Eagle’s Wings newsletter for the collection dates.
We have lists available which show supplies that are needed for each grade level. Bags are brought to the church and placed in the collection bins along with school supplies.
On the last Sunday of the collection week, the bags are placed around the chancel rail and the congregation says a prayer for the unknown child that will receive the bag. The bags are delivered to Gwinnett County Department of Family & Children services.
Should you want to help, but cannot shop, your monetary donation will be greatly appreciated and used to purchase items that are still needed. Make your check payable to Cannon UMC and write Book Bag Collection in the memo area.
